What is a Work Game-face - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
What is a Work Game-face - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You donât need a wide smile, a snapshot pose, a big âole rubber beam, or a wolfish grin. Rather, you need just a slightly open mouth with a friendly upturn of the lipsâ"a small smile. The demeanor Iâm promoting is an undaunted, comfortable-in-your-skin, shiny business game face. Consider the following: A shiny face from your attitude, not from perspiration, transmits well across cultures. Smiling isnât about happiness (although I hope you are). Itâs about confidence and taking responsibility for the energy you bring to the place. Your small smile makes you look awake, alert, alive, implacable, and approachable. You can have a determined jaw but still have a small smileâ" your expression will only enhance the keen intelligence in your eyes. If you smile, you canât as easily chew gum, eat, or drink (which obviously needs to be nixed) because every saliva slap against your jaw is exaggerated in the personâs ear. Not smiling causes inaccurate responses to you. Youâll have an uphill battle without even realizing it.

Life Lessons From Basketball On Doing Nothing
Life Lessons From Basketball On Doing Nothing We are often told that the first thing is to âdo no harmâ. What if doing nothing turns out to be harmful? I have often been afraid of doing something wrong, making a wrong move, committing an error. There are times when I have felt literally frozen in my tracks or, worse yet, headed straight for the big tree at the fork in the road for fear of choosing to go right or left. How many things have I thought about but not done due to the fear of being âwrongâ or âbadâ or ridiculed, including putting off starting this blog for the last three months? What has motivated me to begin is a conversation I had this morning with my husband, who is a basketball coach. The gist of his message was this: The worst thing you can do on court is to do nothing. If you make a move, and you do it purposefully and quickly, then it cannot be bad. Itâs the player who passes the ball and then just stands there that is doing âthe wrong thing.â You can never just stand there and do nothing. While this was about basketball (yes, thatâs what wives of coaches end up listening to at breakfastâ¦and at most other times of the day!), it applies to the rest of life as well. Doing nothing by default turns out to be a choice as well. And it often leads to less desirable results than making a proactive choice, one way or the other. For me, the problem is worst when I have many options and am scared to try one of them for fear of making the suboptimal choice. I also hate closing the door on the others. Thatâs when I need a basketball coach equivalent to shout from the sidelines, âDonât just stand there! Make a move!â Thatâs a big vote for erring on the side of sins of commission rather than sins of omission. Or, as a friend and strategist is fond of saying, âfail forward,â rather than be paralyzed into not trying at all. Well, I am off to make a move!

The 1 often-overlooked person who can help your job search - Hire Imaging
The 1 often-overlooked person who can help your job search - Hire Imaging My client Marty felt overwhelmed and anxious. We had coached through a productive process so that he had figured out what he wanted to do, and with whom. âNowâs the part I really dread,â he told me. âI donât know like research and am afraid itâs going to take too much time.â Well, research is key; and should not be sidestepped ever when you have defined your positioning statement and your target employer list. Then research is a must. But take heart! This is not the time to panic! I gave Marty a tip Iâll share with you. You donât have to learn how to do research. You need to learn how to ask for it! âI want to know the 100 largest software development companies in Minnesota that have been in business fewer than 12 years. If these companies are relatively young but large, my gut tells me theyre headed in a good direction. And I want to be on board. Martyâs pitch above was not perfect, and he often fleshed it out to reveal more information. But the statement typically was great for sharing initially with someone who could help him. So, who was this mystery person? The reference librarian One of your best friends in job-search research is your local librarian. I donât know when the last time was you were in a library, but the experience has far transcended shelves of books! Libraries today are amazing media centers, offering everything from DVDs you can check out, to computer labs connected to just about every database in the world. Some libraries even sponsor job clubs or job search training. So go to your closest library! The best time to hit is when it first opens in the morning. Humbly ask. Marty didnât have to know how to find every one of the emerging and top 100 largest software companies in Minnesota. He had to walk into his library, find the reference librarian. He had to then admit that he hadnât a clue and needed help. He told me the conversation went like this: âIâm Marty Jones, a job seeker. I need to build a list of the 100 largest software companies in Minnesota that have been in business less than 12 years. Can you help me build a list of these?â Nancy, the reference librarian at Martyâs community library said, âAbsolutely, Mr. Jones!â Donât be deterred. If one librarian is not helpful, find another. Visit a different time when someone else has the shift. Go to a different branch. Go to a different suburb or town if you have to. If you have a college or university in addition to your community library, go there. Career center research specialists live for this stuff! They are typically knowledgeable in all databases of companies and organizations, and can help you find lists like Martyâsâ"and every other type imaginable. There may be a fee for these visits. Itâs worth it! Itâs a gold mine. Iâm not telling you that the first or each visit to your library will be productive. But that right librarian is out there. And when you find him or her, youâve struck gold! Somewhere one is waiting for you, ready to be your detective, your investigator, the Watson to your Sherlock. The more challenging the research, the better. This is what they do! Ask for help, accept that help, and get on with the other phases of your job search. A reference librarian, media specialistâ"whatever the titleâ" is someone who went to school and chose to conduct research using the latest technologies. For a living! How can you lose asking this person for help? How much is your time worth? How valuable is it to have that key information in your hands, so that you can then market and go get what you want?! Think about it. This type of professional can keep you from reinventing the wheel. Marty told me it was âthe best thing since sliced bread.â His fears were alleviated when he found someone to take the research monkey off his back! Photo: wanderingone
